ETYMOLOGY / ANTIQUITY
SAGE , from L. sapere "have a taste, have good taste, be wise. The term was applied to the Seven Sages - Thales, Solon, Periander, Cleobulus, Chilon, Bias, and Pittacus. Also known as the Seven Wise Men of Greece. Hippocrates (4th century BCE) prescribed sage as a remedy for lung diseases and gynecological disorders. Dioscurides (1st centry AD) used sage as a diuretic, to stop external bleeding, and to promote menstrual discharge.
Sage is not only ideal for flavouring meat or poultry dishes, it also goes well with cheese, apples and tomatoes. Sage has a strong flavor that is spicy and sharp, with a hint of camphor. Sage smoke can be used as a room deodorizer.
You can also prepare an herbal tea with sage which is very beneficial. Use 1 teaspoon of dried sage per cup of boiling water, steep for 10 minutes and then drink it slowly. .
Store the dried type of the herb in a cool, dark place for a maximum of six months so that its complete flavor is retained.
